To cut a long story very short, 7 years ago, I wanted to take a completely different turn in life, and Julie agreed. She would continue her career with the ABC, and I would run a Bed and Breakfast. So, in March 1998 we decided on a name; - Ashcroft Country Accommodation at McLaren Vale. That was the simple part. Settling on exactly where to build, the design, who would build it, how many guest rooms, how to furnish it, the garden design, etc etc, proved a little more difficult.
Seven years on, and we are well on the road towards our final goal. A Country Estate, with established gardens and a reputation for excellence.
We decided that we would run Ashcroft on traditional, tried and trusted English lines. That is;- always to take one night stays, [ no insisting on minimum 2 or 3 nights, - even at Easter or Christmas ] to make families with children welcome, and to design one of our guest rooms to be completely friendly for guests in wheelchairs.
Quality in every aspect of our operation is of paramount importance to us; from the variety and choice on the breakfast menu, to the Chesterfield furniture in the Drawing Room, we have tried [ and I believe succeeded ] to make each and every one of our guests feel that they are very important to us.
Our efforts in these aspects of our operation were recognised by being given the 2002 and 2004 South Australian Tourism Award for Hosted BandB Accommodation and the 2003 Fleurieu Tourism Award for Hosted BandBs. This is the first time that anyone in the Fleurieu has achieved the SATC award, and the first time that both awards have been held concurrently by anyone in our area. We are very aware of the responsibility this places on us to maintain and hold our standards.
